Walter Reed Institute, 1954, tried to record from cortex of living cats � the field was in its infancy

visual cortex � less muscle between visual cortex

cells there seemed to ignore torch flashed in cat�s face

but responded to hands waved in front

depending on hand movement direction

 

Kuffler 1950s Cold Spring article � on/off centre

 

brown = orange surrounded by something bright

 

white and black aren't related to the absolute amount of light � relative

black in a newspaper headlines = 10x white of paper in a dark room
